Thursday, 9-26-24 Day 17

Ramada Inn La Verkin, UT.

We are departing today so no need to be at 6:00 AM breakfast.   I still woke up early, joined the early morning crowd and wrote postcards while drinking a cup of coffee.   We are packing up, moving back to the trailer, and making a trip to the post office.

Our plan is to boondock tonight on BLM land in the desert near Mesquite NV.  You have to be self sufficient for all power & utilities, definitely no power for AC.  Then Friday morning drive to the Henderson NV Elks Lodge where we will leave the trailer…Bill is an Elk! 🦌  

We are flying home Friday night to attend the wedding of Saralyn and Dom.  Saralyn and Emily met in 1st grade and have been besties ever since.  They spent a lot of time at each others homes while in elementary school. 

On the way we cross the border from Utah to Nevada and it is apparent we will arrive at our desert boondock site about noon and it is HOT HOT HOT.  Bill does NOT NOT NOT like the heat. (truth) 

I suggested we do something fun during the heat of the afternoon, like an air conditioned movie before heading for the desert.  We find a terrific movie theatre in Mesquite NV and decide on “Reagan”.   

We get to the movie theater an hour early because we've gone through yet another time change., 


So, back to the trailer and have lunch.

It's been super convenient to have our fridge and kitchen (and bathroom) with us all the time!

On the way into the movie Bill suggests we drive to Henderson after the movie as it is not far.  


On the way out of the movie Bill has another great suggestion - change our flights to earlier Friday so we will have more time at home.  

We have a new plan!

Arrive at the Elks Lodge, Henderson NV which has an amazing view of the lit up Las Vegas strip at night and we dine outside and enjoy the colorful view.

This Elks lodge is right next to a high school that was having a flag football game... in the heat. 😰

Soon after we arrived, a school security guy came up to let us know there was a guy living out of his tent... he hadn't bothered anyone, but he felt we should know. A nice gesture...but we never saw the guy and he gave us no trouble.





We didn't have any hookups, but were able to run the air conditioner off the generator... thankfully. And it was pretty pleasant to just sit outside for a bit.  We had a view of the strip and the Sphere... looked pretty cool.

Helen - 9/12/24 (Day 3) Prosser Family Campground, Tahoe National Forest Thanks to John Vidal for suggesting Blogger as a blog site. Woke up to a cold but gorgeous day, blue sky with no clouds and surrounded by forest.  We had to take care of some business this morning but then had an al fresco brunch at our site picnic table.            Took a walk down to the lake...  and then made a trip into Truckee for a few groceries and a stop in an amazing Ace Hardware, full of great stuff...lots of non-hardware items!  Stopped for a walk around the Donner Party Historic site and then a bike ride on a dirt and rock trail to the lake, through the forest and beyond. .   Bird Songs: heard Mountain Chickadee, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Red Crossbill, Brown Creeper and Song Sparrow. Had dinner by the propane firepit (thanks Lani & Steve) and watched the stars come out.   Birds I heard today: Red Crossbill

Friday, 10-4-24 Day 25

  Friday, 10-4-24   Day 25 On our morning walk we saw this…in AZ!  Left Page Elks Lodge, Page AZ and headed south, then west toward the south rim of Grand Canyon National Park.  We stopped at the Cameron Trading Post in Cameron AZ which was established around 1911 to trade with Navajo and Hopi locals.  A trip to the post could take days by horse drawn wagon. We got 381 horses pullin' THIS wagon! Definitely a tourist trap, but it was beautifully done inside                                      The ceiling has pressed tin panels with intricate designs.    The wall in the above photos is comprised of antique cabinetry and antique tiffany stained glass panels that served as an apothecary nearly a century ago.  The cabinet drawers each have a brass label engraved with the item to be stored there.  Our tour guide Josh from Antelope Canyon...

Sunday 10-6-24 Day 27

Sunday, 10-6-24  Day 27  We took a ride from the campground along the Grand Canyon Greenway Trail. It's miles about 14 miles round trip, Mostly uphill as we rode to the GC visitor's center, but then, thankfully, mostly downhill back to the camp ground. A very pretty trail...   One of the most interesting things we came across was an American Legion cemetery. It was one of the most well kept cemeteries I've ever seen. There were several gravestones that mentioned the interned as being a Harvey Girl... something I had never heard of, but a Google search gave this result: The Harvey Girls Defined Hospitality in the Wild West of the 1880s More specifically, they were young, single, intelligent women who were also of “good character,” and, presumably, had the sort of sense of adventure that propelled them to unknown territory in the 1880s to work as waitresses. Their legacy: Helping to make travel in the West a lot more enjoyable by serving tasty meals in pleasant surroundings...
