Tuesday, 10-1-24 Day
22
Chief Sleep Easy RV Park, not the nicest park ever. Kinda old, but it had what we needed and was very quiet. Bill installed fridge and freezer fans to move the cold air around inside and keep them at a more uniform temperature. It seems to be helping... but the weather has been cooler as well.
Crossed the border into Utah, we lost count of how many times we were in and out of Utah, Nevada and Arizona over the next few days. The times on our watches, phones and truck clock were not all able to keep up with the time zone changes and at times we were not sure of the accurate time!
Arrived at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, Kanab, Utah early in the afternoon and went for a walk around the campground. It is a semi-desolate and dry area and off the beaten track but, actually quite beautiful.
And checked out some of the gifts at the gift shop...
We decided to do a UTV tour of nearby Peek A Boo slot canyon that afternoon. We drove to the ROAM Outdoor Adventure Co rental location, met our guide J.C. and some of the other tourers.
Before JC (in blue) started running tours in Utah, he was a fishing guide up in Alaska, and I asked him his most memorable bear story...
He had a day off and was going to go fishing with his buddies, but he wanted to get to the best fishing spot before they did, so he was rushing through the bush, turns a corned, and came literally face-to-face with mama grizzly and her cub... like inches away. He froze for a second and then ran like hell. Fortunately, the griz up there are fairly used to humans so she didn't chase him. He figured that if he had been out where griz isn't used to humans, that would have been the end.
We had a BLAST driving the UTV's several miles to the canyon entrance. Bill drove to the canyon and Helen drove the return trip.
After a bit of a rough start...the two women in the picture with JC above rode with him. Behind him, a younger couple were driving, and I was in the rear. They took off and I lost them pretty quickly...
Fortunately, I had started my All Trails app so I could find my way back to where we might have become separated and found JC. Then JC had me follow him with the youngsters in the rear.
We did a round trip walk through Peekaboo Canyon and it is beautiful!
Right at the entrance we saw 125 million year old small, star shaped aquatic fossils embedded in rocks, and fossilized Giant Brain Coral...
Above you can see Anasazi footholds carved into the canyon wall leading to an upper level, possibly used for grain storage. Also a bowl shaped depression on the upper level, possibly used for water storage.
We stopped in the nearby town of Kanab on the return to our campsite. Had a long chat with the Sinclair gas station and store owner. He previously lived in various northern CA cities and ran across the Golden Gate Bridge when he was younger. He and Bill swapped stories about that special experience and he shared that he is currently working on his pilots license. He reminded me of my Uncle Wayne, he had a great laugh. Just one of the many friendly people we have me on our travels.
We saw a snake that night when we drove into the campground, our first one of the trip, about 24”.
