Payton Elks Lodge, Payton AZ


Woke to a chilly morning with army helicopters flying overhead and old military planes buzzing around.

 

Weather has cleared and no more wind.  We dumped our tanks, filled up with potable water and departed for Scottsdale after our morning walk instead of Phoenix as Scottsdale had hookups.  





Taking 87 west to Scottsdale AZ hoping to snag a spot at the Scottsdale Elks Lodge with hookups and laundry!  If not, we will go to the the Phoenix Elks which is basically boondocking.  


We had our choice of 8 spots in Scottsdale and there are no other RV’s here! (others came later) They are having a fundraising event tonight with a live band so it will be loud till at least 10 PM.




 

In 2019 Scottsdale received the prestigious designation of a gold level Bicycle Friendly Community from the League of American Bicyclists.  One of 35 gold level cities in the U.S.  We left the Lodge on our bikes and headed for the Arizona Cross Cut Canal and rode along the canal, under the canal, up and down paths, through Moeur Park into Tempe, then took the Tempe Bridge across the Salt River and rode along the river.   









So many bridges crossing the Salt River and people out on Swan Boats!  There were people walking, cycling, on scooters, running, roller blading…the weather was fabulous not at all like Phoenix area.  We saw a coyote walking in the wash, a bunny a bit later and heard some beautiful bird calls.

  So, this is Bill...  A few years ago, Helen and I decided to get an RV and go RVing. This blog is our attempt to share our adventures (and probable misadventures) with anyone bored enough to read it. 9/13/24 Leaving Prosser Lake, Truckee, Wilber D. May Museum, 9/14/24Rye Patch res.

9/13/24 Bill – Katie’s birthday at Prosser, the day we left. Texted Katie happy birthday. Did a facetime while eating our breakfast. We packed up and left for Lovelock, NV and onto the Rye Patch Recreation Area. Drove about 40 minutes to Truckee for propane (next to the railroad tracks where several questionable characters were walking down the track cracking big bull whips),  Helen checked the Roadside America app and found the Wilber D. May museum. His father started the department store chain May Company so he had a privileged upbringing which he made the most of. For me, highlights of his life include selling all his shares in the May Company in early 1929 and buying government bonds, only to avoid the crash and buy 20x shares back when he returned a year later after the first of 40 or so big game hunts in Africa and trips around the world. A few of the rooms that were part of his ranch were recreated at the museum including his big game trophy room. Proof Bigfoot Exist...

Helen - 9/12/24 (Day 3) Prosser Family Campground, Tahoe National Forest Thanks to John Vidal for suggesting Blogger as a blog site. Woke up to a cold but gorgeous day, blue sky with no clouds and surrounded by forest.  We had to take care of some business this morning but then had an al fresco brunch at our site picnic table.            Took a walk down to the lake...  and then made a trip into Truckee for a few groceries and a stop in an amazing Ace Hardware, full of great stuff...lots of non-hardware items!  Stopped for a walk around the Donner Party Historic site and then a bike ride on a dirt and rock trail to the lake, through the forest and beyond. .   Bird Songs: heard Mountain Chickadee, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Red Crossbill, Brown Creeper and Song Sparrow. Had dinner by the propane firepit (thanks Lani & Steve) and watched the stars come out.   Birds I heard today: Red Crossbill
